  • Total Time: 65
  • Yield: 10–12 servings

Ingredients

  1. Cake (base – chocolate or vanilla)
  2. 2 cake layers, baked and fully cooled (your favorite recipe or boxed mix)
  3. Buttercream Frosting
  4. 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  5. 3½ cups powdered sugar
  6. 2–3 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  7. 1 tsp vanilla extract
  8. Chocolate Drip (Ganache)
  9. ½ cup heavy cream
  10. 1 cup chocolate chips (dark, milk, or white)
  11. Optional decorations:
  12. Sprinkles
  13. Fresh fruit
  14. Chocolate bars
  15. Candy or macarons

Instructions

  1. Place one cake layer on a cake board. Frost evenly and top with the second layer.
  2. Cover the entire cake with a thin crumb coat and chill for 20 minutes.
  3. Frost with a final smooth layer of buttercream. Chill again for 15 minutes.
  4. Heat cream until just steaming (not boiling).
  5. Pour hot cream over chocolate chips; let sit 2 minutes, then stir until smooth.
  6. Let ganache cool slightly until thick but pourable.
  7. Spoon or pipe ganache around the edges to create drips, then fill the top.
  8. Add decorations before ganache sets.

Notes

Cake must be cold before adding drip to control flow.

Test ganache drip on the side before decorating fully.

Too thin? Let ganache cool longer. Too thick? Add warm cream.

White chocolate drips can be colored with gel food coloring.
